The 2022 ICD-10-CM codes are to be used for discharges occurring from October 1, 2021 through September 30, 2022 and for patient encounters occurring from October 1, 2021 through September 30, 2022. This replaces the FY 2021 – January release. As a reminder, the General Equivalence Mappings (GEMS) files are no longer being published and should no longer be utilized.
There are 159 additions, 32 deletions and 20 revisions to the code set. There are multiple changes to the Excludes 1 and 2 rules which coders will need to pay attention to. This code set is to be used for inpatient discharges occurring from October 1, 2021, through September 30, 2022, and outpatient encounters occurring from October 1, 2021, through September 30, 2022.
