DNFB reduction for Hospital Coding

DNFB

Decreased DNFB days for an acute care Hospital

Client:

An Alabama based private, not-for-profit, acute care facility which serves the community for more than 70 years. It serves more than 100,000 patients annually.

Challenge

The hospital faced an increased DNFB due to contract termination with their existing vendor as well as inefficient workflow which resulted in backlog as well as delayed billing worth millions of dollars. Stringent timelines to clear backlog as well as to decrease DNFB from 9 days to less than 4 days.

Solutions

Annexmed has deployed a team of experienced certified IP and Outpatient coders and auditors within 24 hours. Completed the hospital system training within a day. In order to maintain a low unbilled rate, we had created a process workflow to coordinate with various hospital departments and HIM staff to resolve the incorrect department charges (CDM charges) and missing or incomplete documentation. We also created a query process to coordinate with the physicians.

Productivity benchmarks are established and a daily coding targets were provided to the coding team to achieve it. Attractive compensation for after hour work and weekend work were provided to the staff to bring down the hospital DNFB days.

Results

With the established process flow and query process, the hospital had noticed a significant increase in cash flow. The pending accounts unbilled rate has been decreased from $3 million per week to approximately $400K per week. The hospital CFO has appreciated our scalability and quick turnaround.
