Updates on Telehealth Place of Service

Telehealth update 2022

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) has provided a new place of service (POS) code related to telehealth services, as well as revised the description of the existing POS code 02. The effective date is January 1, 2022, and the implementation date is April 4, 2022.

The POS code set provides the necessary setting information to pay claims correctly. At times, the healthcare industry has a greater need for specificity than Medicare. While Medicare doesn’t always need this greater specificity to appropriately pay claims, it adjudicates claims with the new codes. This eases coordination of benefits and gives other payers the setting information they need. Below are the descriptors of telehealth POS:

POS 02: Telehealth Provided Other than in Patient’s Home.

Descriptor: The location where health services and health related services are provided or received, through telecommunication technology. Patient is not located in their home when receiving health services or health related services through telecommunication technology.

POS 10: Telehealth Provided in Patient’s Home.

Descriptor: The location where health services and health related services are provided or received through telecommunication technology. Patient is located in their home (which is a location other than a hospital or other facility where the patient receives care in a private residence) when receiving health services or health related services through telecommunication technology.
